TV Post!

So I'm slowly getting back into TV. And then after that, maybe I'll get into movies again, or video games. I miss stories. (Getting back into) Reading is a slow process, but it's at a pace I'm accepting for now. Podcasts are another story.

I'm just going to ramble about some shows now, the things I'm watching and such. I have to catch up on Burn Notice this weekend and next up are Happy Endings and Man Up because it's faster to binge 30 minute shows!

I gave up on Suburgatory. I like it, but when I was collecting links to download on Friday I went, "It's not THAT important," and clicked out of the post. I'm having more fun with the other shows.

How to Make it in America )

I haven't watched the newest Hung yet, but that show keeps getting better, too. HBO, YOU'RE ON POINT. At least, with my shows. I hear Boardwalk Empire is getting even more bland than it used to be.

In other news, I know I tend to get into cycles where I'm like, "I WISH I KNEW A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT. I'M GONNA LEARN AN INSTRUMENT. INSTRUMENTS ARE EXPENSIVE. I HAVE A KEYBOARD. FUCK IT, MY FINGERS DON'T WORK THAT WAY. MUSIC IS HARD." But guys, OCARINAS. With my new phone I was able to download an Ocarina app. But it doesn't work properly (you can't play a D note, says one comment on the Marketplace... I just know I can't get a higher note than C) so I decided to price real ones. I won't buy a ceramic one because lololol I am a clumsy person who will break that shit eventually. And also, wouldn't it get nasty, being a wind instrument? I remember the recorder from freshman year of high school getting disgusting with my spit. I don't even know if I'm going to buy that particular brand--apparently there are lots of ocarina makers? Anyway, I figure plastic ones are decent enough. And it's geeky enough that I'd stick with it just for the geek factor, if not the musical accomplishment. WE SHALL SEE.

I'm doing a job search and trying to make business cards but I just scrapped the whole design I had spent a month on because I think I should wait until my production company has a legit name. And now I'm fighting between making cards just to give out to friends and people I meet and business cards for when people stop me when I'm on a shoot and wonder what I'm doing. Then I have to shop around for the best deal on printing a bunch of these babies. And possibly getting some about.me cards, too. It's like being productive in the most off-handed way possible.

While I'm doing that, I'm also going through all the new shows I have been wanting to check out. So far Revenge and Person of Interest and 2 Broke Girls are out (sorry Kat Dennings, I can't deal with how unfunny this is), Whitney is my new My Boys in terms of characters I relate to (also hai, Chris D'Elia, plz to be more places) and I'm thisclose to getting back into HIMYM and Psych because I miss the shows. Rather, I keep seeing ads for HIMYM while watching FX Shows and it kills me to not know what's going on with those crazy NY transplants and I saw a Psych trailer and I got angry that I wouldn't be seeing the new episodes it featured. Also out: It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I watched six episodes back to back and didn't laugh once.

Next up is catching up on HBO shows: Hung, How To Make It In America and Bored to Death tomorrow, then Wilfred, Leverage and Alphas next week.

More things:

- Diggnation is ending in December. I know most don't care, but I posted most of my thoughts via Twitter yesterday. I'm behind by almost a year, but I'm glad there were more episodes. It was supposed to end last December and when it didn't, I was glad. They probably won't come back to NYC, but I'm glad they at least made it here--they always talked about doing tours, college or otherwise, around the US/world and never did. I'm much more okay with it ending now than I was when they announced last year that they were going to stop soon. And with that chapter of their lives closing, so does mine. It's time for me to move on and maybe be more of a producer of entertainment and not so much a consumer.

- To that end, my fall schedule isn't much. Right now I'm just downloading all the aired episodes of new stuff to see if I like them but I'm not keeping up with a lot of my old shows. It's weird, but the only ones I'm keeping are It's Always Sunny, Archer, and Modern Family. Well, I'm keeping others that don't really adhere to summer/fall seasons too, like Leverage and my USA shows (not Psych, though, I've finally given up on that one). But I'm testing out 2 Broke Girls, Whitney, Person of Interest, Revenge, Suburgatory and Once Upon A Time. I was going to watch Playboy's Club but it's already canceled so TROLOLOL MAKE MY LIFE EASIER. Hopefully I'll have time to watch them all on Friday!

- Alex Goot is my herrooooo. I don't think I knew he covered this song, but STARS IN MY EYES FOREVER, GOOT. <33333 (Youtube is being weird, so you only get a link. :/ )

Caught up with TV! Mostly. I still have to watch The Event, Terriers and this week's Undercovers...

How I Met Your Mother )

Chuck )

No Ordinary Family )

The Big Bang Theory )

Big Time Rush )

I have a lot to do today. I miss when weekends actually meant I got to relax and not catch up on everything there wasn't enough time for in the week.
bohemia: (ATHF - Meatwad)
So... a week later I'm caught up on all the TV that premiered this week! I think the only one I'm already giving up on is Hawaii 5-0. No fault of its own, it's just not my thing. Oh, and Lonestar, because I completely zoned out on that one and the premise isn't that strong in my opinion.

This isn't all the shows I watched, just the ones I have anything to say other than "It was cool."

How I Met Your Mother )

The Event )

Terriers )

In conclusion, WHAT.

BORED TO DEATH IN AN HOUR. I AM EXCITE.

DAMN YOU TBS. I didn't even get to say goodbye correctly, like with Ally McBeal. They just cut it off without letting them wrap up the storylines, and on top of that I was spoiled for the last episode on Twitter. I'm gonna go be morose for the next three hours, while I fall asleep to the Totally Rad Show.

School, and everything related, has been going okay. My day was pretty great until the cancellation news. I'm still learning to get back into the swing of juggling so much stuff and waking up early enough to get where I need to be each day, but I'll get it down by next month. I really just want it to be this weekend now.

Oh, and here's my fall TV schedule:

Fall TV 2010 )
bohemia: (ATHF - Meatwad)
So next weekend [livejournal.com profile] splits_thesky and I are off to Boston! It's her birthday the following week, and she wanted to go to Boston? So... we're... doing that. IT SOUNDS SO WEIRD BUT THAT'S BASICALLY IT. We have a fairly loose itinerary planned for Friday and Saturday (Sunday is when we return) that includes the New England Aquarium, the MIT Museum, a picnic/lunch at Boston Public Garden (Beacon Hill!) and maybe a movie tour or visit to the Zoo or some other museum. Those of you from/frequent visitors to Cambridge/Boston, what are good places to eat lunch/dinner? We're generally going on Yelp! ratings and pictures but after DC we're wary of things going to complete hell on us. So any advice in that area (or tips on far more interesting museums/sites to see) are welcome.

I watched some pilots: Hellcats, Nikita and Terriers. Terriers was the only one that really hooked me. Nikita seems intriguing enough but it didn't focus too much on her. I don't want to judge the show so harshly from one episode, but everyone else was more intriguing to me. Every time it went back to Nikita I was like, "Yeah, whatever, cut back to the other characters!" Hellcats is too teenager-drama-catty for my tastes. Terriers is supposed to be an hour-long dramedy, but it feels much more dramatic than comedic. The only comedy stems from its Psych-meets-Bored to Death premise of LOL THESE GUYS ARE JUST WINGING THIS DETECTIVE JOB, but since I watch both Psych and Bored to Death it feels a bit tired to me. Still, I love Donal Logue enough to keep watching even if it hadn't pulled me in.

I also wanted to start watching Sons of Anarchy again and catch up with Human Target. I can do that within a week, right? >.>

Men of a Certain Age )

Day 21 → A recipe

Back in high school, I was obsessed with Ewan McGregor and decided, randomly, that I should learn to cook English and Scottish recipes. Only because I wanted to be different, and have my friends be like, "Of course you can't cook anything Spanish but you make [insert random Highland dish here]!" But it turns out a lot of Anglo recipes have to do with red meat, of which I am not a fan. So I learned things like shortbread and scones. And baking is supposed to be difficult, but I've never had problems with anything I've baked.

Simple Scones

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 stick unsalted butter, frozen
1/2 cup dried fruit or nuts (raisins, craisins, dried pineapple, dried apples, dried blueberries, walnuts, almonds, pecans, etc. anything that won't immediately squish and make the flour marbled)
1/2 cup sour cream
1 egg

Adjust oven rack to lower-middle position and preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt.

Grate butter into flour mixture on the large holes of a box grater; use your fingers to work in butter, then stir in raisins.

In another bowl, whisk sour cream and egg until smooth.

Stir sour cream mixture into flour mixture until large dough clumps form. Use your hands to press the dough against the bowl into a ball. Don't add more liquid, work at it until it all comes together.

Place dough on a lightly floured surface and pat into a 7- to 8-inch circle about 3/4-inch thick. Sprinkle with a teaspoon of sugar. Use a sharp knife to cut into 8 triangles-- or like a pizza. Place on a cookie sheet (I use my mom's stoneware), about 1 inch apart. Bake until golden, about 15 to 17 minutes. Cool for 5 minutes and serve warm or at room temperature.

They're the best for breakfast because they're filling enough to last you until lunch, and great with tea, especially Earl Grey. :3

This has broken my brain. Is he for real for real? Are they? I DON'T KNOW ANYMORE.

Also, there was this exchange:
psych_usa (Seriously? Can someone else please answer this... lol )RT @wineclubguy: No Christmas episode this year?
@psych_usa not for nothing but all usa gave us for christmas this year was a bittersweet monk finale and a crazy white collar cliffhanger :(
@boheme06 Well that certainly didn't sound bitter at all... LOL

I TAKE MY CHRISTMAS PSYCH SERIOUSLY, OKAY. :(

Anyway, my mom came home today with this 3 foot "stunner" of a (fake) tree and decorated it just now. So we have a tree? I go in and out of feeling festive, so I'm not "FINALLY!" I tried listening to Christmas music and it worked for a day and then the feeling went away. Christmas is next week and I'm not excited or giddy, just "Oh, yes, that's happening." I'm more excited for my birthday in January, even though I won't be doing anything. I'm starting to like the feeling of "leveling up" as it were, so that's why.

Actually, the only festive-like things I'm enjoying right now are the 12 Days of Christmas going on at [livejournal.com profile] capslock_spn and Markshakkah at [livejournal.com profile] mishaland.

I realized I hadn't mentioned anything about TV on Monday, but HIMYM was being completely filler (and what's with that lately?) and Accidentally on Purpose was being funny yet still struggling. The real winner was The Big Bang Theory, so I'll cut those thoughts.

OMG, I was trying to post last night and something was screwy with LJ, because all my code was correct but it kept fudging the posting. So I split it up-- the meme in one post, and TV in the next. And well, then Melrose Place came on. I was ~*distracted*~.

Brothers & Sisters )

How I Met Your Mother )

I actually legitimately adored that episode of Accidentally On Purpose.

The Big Bang Theory )

I watched Men of a Certain Age, too. The music's amazing and the writing feels real, like these aren't characters or archetypes. And it's funny without being depressing or insulting. Definitely continuing with that one.

And Leverage comes back January 13th! I LOVE JANUARY.

Melrose Place )

Last night I watched this movie called After Sex. I LOVED IT. It's a series of vignettes of couples talking right after sex. If you liked Waking Life or movies like that where it's all just talk (I call them "straight plays on film" even though most films can technically be called that), I recommend you seek it out. :) It was only on my radar because Emmanuelle Chriqui was in it but the rest of the cast is pretty good, as are the conversations. Also, James DeBello was never really on my radar much before (creeper from Swimfan!), but in this movie I realized he looks like a cross between Seth Rogen and Brendan Fraser and that kinda blew my mind.

THERE'S A NEW PSYCH COMMERCIAL, EVERYONE. Apparently they can't officially upload it until January due to licensing or something but omg, I love this showwwww. I just wish Henry was in it too. There's six people in the original video. :/

I HAVE NEW FRIENDS, HELLLOO. Um, relevant links for you: a round-up of links, contact info and a introduction post here, a poll for a meetup I'm trying to organize here and the opt-in poll for my J2 writing filter (that will finally go into affect the moment I finish this fic I'm writing now) here.

Only three of my shows are new this week. And I guess Monk, because it's the last one and I have to see how it ends. I'm still not over Psych becoming the oldest show on USA. What is that. And I'm not over the random new move to Tuesdays either. That's Melrose Place/V/Lost night. And My Boys, I think. I never had shows on Tuesdays and then suddenly they're all attacking me that night. D: And the most TV I can watch live without DVR is two hours straight before I zone out so there will be problems with this schedule. DNW.

Anyway, have some memes and then some commentary/review/whatever on TV.

Brothers & Sisters was fun, despite all the melodrama.

Melrose Place )

Okay, I'm going back to writing. I'm determined to get to my J2 epic fic next week so I want to edit all the ones that have been beta'd and then finish this Britney/Justin one. I'm aiming for 12K but so far I have written only 2K in two days and it's only scenes here and there and nowhere near a cohesive story. IDK, I might just turn them into a series instead because it's super sloppy and I'm not sure I can fix it. It depends on what it looks like at the end of the week when I've written the skeleton.

Happy Thanksgiving all my fellow US-Americans! I made scones today, and I'll make stuffing tomorrow and the parade will be on and the family'll be here and FOOOOOOOOD. I love it. I did cut my finger washing dishes like the true moron I am, so now I can't scroll correctly on my laptop (you need two fingers and it's not recognizing my finger through the bandage). Such is my life.

My family has always been a huge fan of America's Funniest Home Videos (it's a Sunday night thing, I guess) and my dad sent me this video link. Mentos/coke bomb gone horribly wrong.

White Collar is back on track. I'm excited to see how this plays out. V is kind of boring, but I'm not bored enough to stop watching, and I feel like things are going to heat up... eventually. Modern Family was hysterical, if the guest stars fell flat and Sunny was eh. I did like Frank messing everything up.

This is a great link about RPF and fandom. I agree with her points and a lot of the later comments bring up some amazing points that blew my mind. I missed most of Brothers & Sisters when it aired because I was busy sitting around processing things they brought up about characterization in RPF.

Also, I didn't take that part of the Supernatural episode mentioned that way, but considering the pictures it reminded me of, I think it shows how slow I am (especially because I'm always saying Dean=Jared more than Jensen).

Also, anyone want to be a beta? I've got one original fiction, two How I Met Your Mother fanfictions (Barney/Robin and Ted/Marshall/Lily), and one each of Leverage (Parker/Hardison), Push (Nick/older!Cassie), Brother & Sisters (Justin/Rebecca) and Supernatural (gen) fics. I know [livejournal.com profile] xphoenixrising and [livejournal.com profile] wandersfound expressed interest, but I don't want you to feel obligated ;) If anyone's interested, PM/e-mail me with your e-mail address and I'll send you the fics... sometime on Wednesday because tomorrow is Diggnation in NYC again and I have running around to do beforehand so I probably won't be online at all tomorrow.

And I found episodes of Secret Girlfriend online so I caught up with that. I only wanted to see it for Sandra McCoy, but it's frat boy humor and completely random so I'm enjoying it. Plus, the female cast is completely made up of girls I've seen in other shows before so it's great for cracky crossover ideas.

Big Bang Theory wasn't as funny as I expected it to be. I kinda saw through the whole fanboy-actor fan service idea and the B-story was almost insulting somehow. Eh.

White Collar, though, was better than I expected, although I'm still wondering how the series will unfold. It reminds me of Leverage and Burn Notice and Neal feels like if Barney Stinson and Shawn Spencer merged.

Onto the point of this post. I cleaned out my computers recently and picked up a few tricks and software along the way, so I thought I'd share a few links. I tracked down two Windows equivalents to two Mac-only apps, although try those at your own risk since I haven't (obviously) tested them. Most of them are shareware, but I haven't run into anything besides reminders to pay.

StickyWindows - Back in the days of Mac OS 9 you could turn your windows into tabs along the bottom of your screen and every now and then I'd still catch myself trying to do this. So now there's an app that brings it back! It keeps my desktop cleaner, while still keeping the windows I need right there.
DiskInventoryX - Scans and then presents the contents of your hard drive in a graphical way, so you can see where the space hogs are hiding.
* Windows: WinDirStat and/or SpaceMonger
Hazel - NEAT MAINTENCE UTILITY. It's gold to have, trust me.
* Windows: RoboBasket
OnyX - Runs maintenance tasks, clears out log files, deleted orphaned files-- all in all, it helps un-bloat your system.
AppCleaner - Generally Macs don't use uninstallers, but sometimes things get orphaned if you just throw out the application (preferences, log files, etc.) There's also AppZapper and AppDelete, but AppCleaner doesn't have restrictions on its free-ness. XD

iScreensaver - Make your own screensaver! Available for Mac and Windows. (I'm using this ripped by File2HD.com)
SaveHollywood - Turn any Quicktime file into a screensaver. I used to use this to play movie trailers before, but I don't download trailers much anymore. Every now and then I'll be obnoxious and set a Weebl's video on there.
FadeText - Displays any text as a screensaver. For a while I had filled this with Shoebox quotes, and then I had the lyrics to "Do You Want To Know A Secret?" by The Beatles. :)
