bohemia: (Black Books - I hate everything)
Didn't go to that party from my last post. I couldn't find the address so after walking around for almost an hour and getting unhelpful texts from a co-worker I went home. My sister was gone this weekend though, so I had the room to myself. OBVIOUSLY THIS MEANS NETFLIX TIME.

Things wot I've seen so far:
Black Books
The IT Crowd (first season, gave up)
Stephen Fry in America (first three, will get back to eventually)
To The Ends of the Earth (I... fell asleep twice)

And a bunch of movies I half-paid attention to while I ran around AO3 a bit just to get them off my queue. Some I ended up really enjoying like Different for Girls, even if by that time of the night--after the really chase but also adorable The Decoy Bride--I just wanted to see them bone.

Speaking of The Decoy Bride (I didn't even know he was in it until he was the first one to pop up) I'm obsessed with finding everything Dylan Moran. I dug out Shaun of the Dead, which I own, and the S2 features of Black Books which I also own (randomly, thanks old job of my dad's) and downloaded Yeah, Yeah because it was the only complete Moran-related thing on the ihearts. BUT I NEED MORE. As for Black Books itself, I have so much love for it. I'm amazed at how funny and charming it was. I expected IT Crowd to be more of the same, but that one seems more like the sitcom from Extras. And while I don't exactly ship them, I would not be adverse to Bernard/Fran fic. Or more crappy puppet shows like the Black Dolls extra.

Why am I just getting into series that no one on Tumblr cares about anymore. It's like I don't even know my dashboard anymore. :(

I feel like I haven't spoken about other things I've done this summer because Torchwood/Doctor Who/NETFLIXXX so... bullets:

- Saw Brave, Magic Mike, and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. All great for their own reasons, even if Magic Mike showed me more of Olivia Munn than I wanted to see. And McConaughey. WHO EVEN LIKES HIM. I DON'T UNDERSTAND. PUT IT AWAY. Brave was sort of a B-list Pixar movie. It was nice but not their best. And AL: VH was fun and ridiculous and HE THREW A HORSE AT HIM.

- Went to Boston the weekend after July 4th because it was the only vacation my sister could afford and I have been there twice so I was their tour guide. By day two my sister had the hang of the transit system (coming from NYC, ANYTHING is decipherable). We heard "Payphone" almost three times a day so that was the theme song of the trip.

- Saw LeVar Burton at the Bronx Zoo a couple of week ago. He was introducing the Reading Rainbow app and posing for pictures. I wanted to talk to him but the line was long. I went around the zoo to all my favorite spots and rides instead.

- Saw The Amazing Spider-Man; it was cool. Refuse to see The Dark Knight Rises. I don't care.

- Tried learning basic Welsh phrases and changed my FB into Welsh for a while. Was confused as all fuck all around. I'm going to keep trying. I've always wanted a basic knowledge in Welsh, Gaelic and Mandarin. Japanese is slightly like Russian so I've got a foot in that door. I just need to decide on a Nordic language to complete my bucket list of languages.

- Went to The New World's Fair 2012 in Queens Saturday solely because it was at Flushing Meadows and I've always wanted to go to the park because of Men in Black. And then this year MIB3 came out and I felt like I just needed to go. But it wasn't like the grand expo my mind imagined the original to be. It was basically four tents and a stage and completely conspiracy theorists and hippie agendas. So I sat by the Unisphere for a while and then left. I'd tweeted/FB'd asking if anyone wanted to come to The Way Station but no one replied so I stayed in Queens and tried to go to the bar that was the Firecracker from The Black Donnellys. It ended up being packed so I went next door to a Thai shop for curry.

That's been my life lately. I can't complain. Now to get around to commenting everywhere!
bohemia: (Doctor Who - Allons Y Janto)
The way Netflix has the episodes I thought I only had the finale to go, but the last episode of season six on Netflix is actually the Christmas episode. So although I'll probably update this with thoughts on that, here's my reboot!Who thoughts.

Nine will always be my doctor... )
bohemia: (Doctor Who - ALL THE PEOPLE)
Cut for spoilers for a three year old episode/specials )

I am holding off on Eleven because I need to focus at work and I know I'd try and weasel out of things just to get home and watch more episodes. But I did watch Party Animals and Matt Smith is adorable (I've seen him in at least one other thing before, though), if nothing else.

NYC Pride (the ~March~ as it's now called) is tomorrow. Excited is an understatement.
bohemia: (Cabin Pressure - FINE)
So I tried watching Doctor Who back during season one of Heroes because obviously, everyone was mentioning it because of Eccleston. I had heard of it originally because the Ewan McGregor forums I used to frequent were fussing over creepy David from Shallow Grave actually being a delightful comedic actor. And my dad worked at a place that printed DVDs and stuff so one day he brought home discs 1, 2 and 4 of season one. So I went about downloading some of season two and the episodes I was missing from disc 3 and went about watching it.

I expected a deep mythos and gritty sci-fi drama like Heroes. I was expecting small links to tie into a greater arc by the end of the first season. I expected to have a few quality characters and ships off the bat. Basically I thought it was the British Heroes. Suffice to say, IT'S NOT THAT. So I gave up. And then later on... I believe [ profile] riotgirl77 brought it up as she was trying to convert her friend. So I popped in the discs and got all the way to "The Impossible Planet" before I COULDN'T CARE ANYMORE. NOTHING WAS HAPPENING.

So then [ profile] splits_thesky got into Who for good (after a few tries of her own, I feel I should point out) and I was still lost. But then Tumblr happened (...because it's its own phenomenon?) and I read a post about how the key to enjoying Doctor Who is realizing it started as a children's show and knowing it'll never take itself seriously. It's campy and fun and always has that at the core. I can already tell that Moffat taking over changes that, just by the nature of his episodes, but I tried again.

I started alll the way back at Nine and just trudged through. I wanted to see Martha because I loved her on Torchwood. I wanted to see Torchwood grow (YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH I LOVE HEARING THE THEME IN THE BACKGROUND IN RANDOM EPISODES. I'M LIKE, 'OH THIS IS THE SONG OF MY PEOPLE'). I want to see Ianto one last time. I'm also sort of interested in Moffat-run Who and Eleven. And right now I'm justtt about to start the finale of S4 but I know this is the last time I'll see Ianto Jones and it's hurting just knowing that. I AM EMOTIONALLY ATTACHED TO HIM. OKAY. SHUT UP. I JUST LISTENED TO "THE DEAD LINE." THIS IS REAL.

Anyway. Yeah, Who.

...I think that's all? My dilemma after S4 is tracking down "Planet of the Dead" because somehow it is the one special Netflix doesn't have and I can't get past "The Next Doctor" until I see that.

Also I just watched the Children in Need specials and omg the one when Nine becomes Ten. *heart breaks*
bohemia: (Torchwood - Ravenclaw Ianto)
The good thing about this is that I'm finally going to try Doctor Who again. The last time I tried to watch it, I think Heroes was in the middle of its first season. There's considerably more to catch up on now, but I really like Martha Jones and pre-S3!Jack, so I'm going to trudge through for them.

And that one episode with Ianto.

But lengthier thoughts!

Torchwood through Children of Earth )

However, I do want to listen to the radio dramas. I already have Lost Souls from iTunes to listen to on my way home tomorrow. I'm trying to keep my spending money for, you know, eating so I'm holding myself back from just buying the rest of them. I'll have to check YouTube later.

I'm trying to also get into John Barrowman's music but I can't take his originals seriously and Gareth's Blue Gillespie is just hilariously bad in that they sound like Eric Balfour's Fredalba from 2007. I want to like them! I liked Fredalba! But you can't be serious. What year are you living in, GD-L. And what is that equipment. I cannae hear a word you're saying.

Okay, back to Doctor Who. I forgot how much I hated Jack when he first popped up. THIS IS REALLY WEIRD NOW.
bohemia: (Misc - Nutrionist's apprentice)
I hope anyone who watched Baron's show enjoyed it. I guess the Food Network isn't the Cooking Channel for me, because what was on my channel was something about diners and drive-ins.

Anyway, I'm back from Philly Con, which was pretty awesome. I want to say it was better than last year's because the layout was different (less of a line out the door for people who already had tickets), but we didn't do anything different. The biggest mess was around Chris Hemsworth's booth, but I got a decent shot of him from far away and then moved on.

Frankenstein Encore Screenings )

Okay, I'm going to get back to Torchwood and Primeval! REVIEW SOONISH (maybe Tuesday)?
bohemia: (Cabin Pressure - Control!)
This entry was better planned before but I'm sucked into Netflix right now, so you get the "HEY I NEEDED TO MENTION THIS. GOTTA GO BYE." version.

Thing the first: It's like an hour away (told you, better planning is not the strong point here), but if you get the Cooking Channel (it's the same as the Food Network for me, apparently--I don't watch those channels ever), at 10PM EST The Culinary Adventures of Baron Ambrosia premieres! YOU SHOULD WATCH IT. Baron's from the Bronx and actually has a show on the channel I work for called Bronx Flavor that is basically the local version of what he aims to do on CABA. I saw it described on GetGlue as "like if Adult Swim decided to do a cooking show" and... I guess, yeah, that is a good description. We are really proud and want the best for Baron because he's actually a great guy and just won a New York Emmy in March for Bronx Flavor. So if you are around, WATCH IT. Especially if you like those shows that feature weird foods and exotic stuff.

Thing the second: Tomorrow I'm going to Philly again! This time for Wizard World Philly, which will be the second time I've gone. [ profile] splits_thesky is cosplaying as Captain Jack from Torchwood and my Twilight Princess Link cosplay isn't done, so in a last ditch effort, I am going as Ianto Jones! I've never seen Torchwood before, but I needed fancy work clothes anyway and it seemed like a good reason to buy bright colors and a new tie and vest. Well, I just sat down and watched the first episode of TW and really enjoyed it, but I promised myself and [ profile] splits_thesky I'd get through Primeval first, so that's what I'm aiming for tonight and next week. ...after I watch this Janeane Garofalo special that was featured in (A)sexual.

Thing the third: The (A)sexual documentary is on YouTube. I don't know if I mentioned this before, and I have nothing to do with it (other than being asexual) but I watched it finally and it was heart-breaking but good! If anything it's a good introduction to the world of asexuals. I did wish it went further into the asexual spectrum, because they sort of skirt around the fact that some asexuals willing do have sex. Each of the couples they feature is like "yeah, we stopped." Also my heart aches for David Jay. I KNOW THAT FEEL, BRO. Come here and be my cuddle buddy. Anyway, I'm not sure that it's an official release as the filmmaker and David himself haven't mentioned it on Twitter, but I've waited long enough to watch it and promote it, so all the people I wanted to see it are getting alerted. When it's available for buying, I will put up the money for it as well.

ETA: Bah, apparently it wasn't an official release. According to the Facebook group it comes out on June 5th, so I'l re-link to it then.

Thing the fourth: I bought tickets to see Frankenstein encore screenings on Wednesday and Thursday downtown at AMC Empire 25. I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this on Tumblr, but all I got back was "oh, but Sherlock NYC is seeing it Saturday!" Well, as I said above, I'm out of town tomorrow. And I'll willingly go alone, but I thought I'd mention it if anyone here wanted to come along. I promise I won't bite--either day. ;)

Also, this song has been in my head alll week, IDEK. I am not even technically Cumberbatched anymore.
bohemia: (Avengers - Phil Anthropist Donald Blake)
So Saturday was amazing--met up with a bunch of Sherlock fans over at the Way Station--where I have never been, but always wanted to try out. Apparently it's less of a Doctor Who bar and more steampunk bar with a TARDIS bathroom. But it gets more press from the bathroom than anything steampunk. Anyway, I had a great time and hello to new people from that day! I hope I don't scare any of you away. Thanks to [ profile] apis_cerana for organizing it. It was fantastic from start to finish.

If anyone wants to learn more about me, there is a sticky post on my journal, and also my page. Have at 'em!

I got a virus or something from something I ate and was laid out most of Sunday for it. But then towards the nighttime I trekked over to [ profile] splits_thesky's place and we made Memorial Day into MIB weekend. We watched the first two movies, then some of the special features and then went to see MIB3 the next day. We were so well-versed in everything MIB that we were pretty excited. BUT ALSO they threw in some things about the lore from this companion book I have from the first movie and akfhjdskalfas. And every time I was like, "BUT NO, THIS IS WRONG DON'T SAY THAT," they'd say something that made sense with the other movies/cartoon/book again. And for as much as people were excited that they were shooting the movie in the Bronx, there was ONE LOCATION that I recognized ("Cosmic Lanes" because I only pass that place every day on the way to work). Everything else was like, Queens, the street outside the Apple SoHo temporary store, random Hollywood backlot from Simone and other movies, etc. The diner might've been the Pelham Bay Diner, but I haven't been inside so I couldn't say for sure.

Anyway, I loooove that movie. And it so made up for the second one. I enjoyed the second one. But this one felt more like a MIB movie. :3 I just wish Will Smith had done the song for it, because I love Pitbull in theory, but wtf is that track.

And then today I went to see Battleship with my sister. I like Michael Bay movies, generally. I'll always defend him because I like explosions and dumb action sometimes! But I was really bored during this one. I did enjoy the fact that the bombs were legit pegs that landed on the boat and that they had to resort to using a grid to fight the aliens. And bringing in the veterans. But the stakes weren't there, it was only their ship out there, I didn't care about any of the subplot characters (or the leads which might've been because I don't care for Kitsch or ASkars like the internet does), "dumb shit" (my nickname for the blonde kid with the frog) actually made it through, and the stinger scene was lame. Also I zoned out during two battle scenes, one of which was the final one so it felt like: "BOMBS ASLODE! ...Okay, medal time!" which would've given me whiplash if I wasn't slouched halfway down my seat wondering why this movie wasn't over a half-hour ago.

Funnily, I was wondering to myself why anyone cares about Kitsch (I assume it's because of FNL, but everyone from that show I cannot stand in future endeavors, so...), and The Covenant popped into my mind. And I was thinking, "Wow, that movie was such a bomb. I wonder what happened to those dudes from that movie. They were so poised to be action stars and NO ONE CARED. It was like, only Steven Strait got a maybe-ish career." Then I got home. Look up The Covenant. Some of the other dudes were Sebastian Stan, Chace Crawford and Taylor Kitsch. LOL WHOOPS. I mean, we got a nice Bucky out of Stan, but I honestly don't care for any of those dudes. I'm going to go have a Chris Evans marathon to cleanse my palette, now that I own, you know, even more of his movies than I did already.
bohemia: (Push - OMGWTFCHINA)
Uhh, hi!

Things are sort of up and down for me right now, but today was a good day. I spent it mostly just reading fic. Anyway, I'm trying to go back on my flist, but... suddenly LJ won't let me go anything past skip=100, even while filtered into just journals. So... anything between 4/25 and 5/7 I won't have read! Blame LJ. And link me!

Otherwise, I will try to be on more often. I just started a DeviantArt account mainly to drool over art because Tumblr isn't so great at bringing specific things to my eyes and danbooru can only do so much with western fandoms. So those of you over there can add me, if you want. My username is bohemu.

I'm making those fanmixes I mentioned a while back. Exciting!
bohemia: (Sherlock - DEAL WITH IT LESTRADE)
I never thought I'd see the day that I'd be too busy to post an update. And yet here we are...

I'm not really busy, honestly. I mean, there's stuff to do at work but I'm more interested in writing now. Of course now they're trying to give me other things to do. Yeah.... about that...

Whatever, Boston was phenomenal, as it was last time. We left on Friday and our Megabus didn't have outlets like they usually do--the bus wasn't even a Megabus bus. So we couldn't watch Netflix via our phones like we'd planned. We had music and Cabin Pressure and other things but ended up playing 7 Little Words on my phone, fighting my phone's GPS that was always off by at least an hour, and chatting and/or making each other giggle with misread/misheard moments along the way. As we do.

We stayed with Divya's cousin Syon again, who did his best to be around now and then even though it's finals or something now (IDK, college is so far away~~ to me) and his adorable dog Humphrey, who we ended up essentially making AUs for (The Humphs is his street name). Oh, and Syon's roommates. One of which I saw exactly once, and the other who we awkwardly met again during an impromptu discussion of Zelda and philosophy because he had the same book as I do.

There were probably more in-jokes that we've forgotten and that will come up later.

Anyway, my sister decided Boston is where she wants to go for her July vacation with my nephew. I'll be going along as her guide. BOSTON, I WILL BE BACK.
bohemia: (Sherlock - Fairies!)
I've been meaning to make a post since Friday. I'm horrible.

- I cut my hair! I really meant to make a post asking for options on which cut to get, but I never got around to it and settled on this, which translated to my salon as Rihanna meets Halle Berry. It didn't come out as epic as that girl's, but I like it. It's so much easier to maintain when I wash it and the breeze when it's windy is AWESOME.

Instagrammed photo under here )

- I'm going to Boston this weekend! Divya and I are going to the comic con. I'm cosplaying Ramona Flowers again just because I don't have anything else ready. But Boston! I love you and have missed you. The four hour bus ride I have not, but what can you do!

And now a bunch of local music reccs from my workplace )

- In other news, my sister and I are slowly working through the Harry Potter movies (she'd only seen the first three), and by slowly I mean we watched SS and COS on Sunday, POA and GOF Monday, and OOTP and HBP this last Sunday. It's fun to watch them grow up and it's almost impossible for me to not get wrock songs with lyrics that are direct quotes stuck in my head.

- Speaking of HP, if you're just getting Pottermore, add me! I'm fireboltlight136. I'm not on much, but I plan to be once the next book opens up! Or if you want to duel, because... points, amirite.

Oh, also this happened and is possibly the greatest cover of my new favorite song.I didn't think they could make that song work, but they did and it's still classic Goot and Sugg dorkiness and I love it a lot. #friendship!
bohemia: (Sherlock - Stop it stop this)
I feel like there are things I should talk about but nothing I really want to discuss. In general I've been feeling moody and unwanted, and that's never good. When I get home I just plop onto my bed until 1) I need to tend to Starly 2) Someone texts me and I have to reach for my phone 3) I remember something I needed to do on the computer I can't do at work 4) dinner or 5) I need to get ready for bed, if I get home past 10PM.

It's not good for all the plans I had to be productive this month, but what can you do.

Sherlock NYC Meetup )

The other exciting thing this week was the idea that "Fifty Shades of Grey" is on the NYTimes Bestsellers lists. And I don't actually care for Twilight or this book in general, but I love that it was a fanfiction story that was re-chopped and turned into a publishable novel and now it's getting a movie deal. That's HUGE! I wish it was another fandom because the Twilight fandom is enough facepalm and current media darling for even MORE attention on it. But I also feel like fanfiction is still looked upon as this dirty, smutty secret of the internet written by sad, little denizens of their parents' basements. And then this sort of validates fanfiction as a decent hobby. I mean, this old Naomi Novik article (I HAVEN'T READ TEMERAIRE BUT I PROMISE TO [...[ profile] splits_thesky], AS SOON AS I'M DONE WITH THE HUNGER GAMES, WHICH IN TURN IS HAPPENING WHEN I'M DONE WITH SHERLOCK CANON) and the comments represent the war I imagine happening between fandom and the mainstream media, and I think the success of "Fifty Shades of Grey" is a giant leap forward for fandom. Also, the fact that it's not even readily in print format, but still hit the bestseller list? AWESOME. I almost want to read it except that it doesn't sound like an AU I'd go for in a fandom I was in. Is it bad that I'm championing this? Whatever.

bohemia: (Sherlock - THIS)
I just got home, put my dinner in the microwave, saw my dad watching X2 on TV and said something about it being Tuesday, went, "HOLY SHIT IT'S TUESDAY!?" and ran to vote. GUYYSSSS. I love Fandom March Madness. And being that I am in only one fandom this year, GUESS WHO'S GETTING STANNED. Sherlockians, I shall meet you in the comments over there~! (LOOKS LIKE IT'S JOHN IN THE LEAD. GO HEDGEHOG, GO!)

WAIT, GUYS, WTF IS THIS AVATAR MESS. WHY IS TOPH LOSING. I am enjoying how Kelly Kapoor and Annie Sawyer are winning, and there are some pleasant surprises (Zoe? Lana? Sweet Dee? Teen Wolf and The Borgias are still on? Blaine Anderson ISN'T winning?), even still.

bohemia: (BTR - Internet)
Remember when I used to talk about TV ALL THE TIME? Remember when LJ was something YOU HAD TO CHECK EVERY DAY? Yeah, well, I'm finally giving up. Well not entirely, but today I went to catch up on three shows and without MU around, it is next to impossible to get any episode more than two days old. So I have 3x11 of Modern Family and all of Leverage and... I guess whatever I can find OnDemand. Otherwise, unless it's something I'm currently caught up on (Whitney, Sherlock, Archer, Grimm, Hell on Wheels, American Horror Story) I don't know what's going on in my shows anymore. And I don't really have anything else to post about, heh.

I'm also starting to accept that LJ is dying. I still don't enjoy DW enough to go there, and Tumblr is too fast for me to keep up with at a normal pace (as much as I LOVE the Sherlock fandom I'm finding there), so I'll still be on LJ from time to time. But I barely check my flist, and when I do, I use my filter which isn't fair to those who aren't on that filter. I haven't read some of your posts since the summer.

So I'm doing some cuts, and nudging others. I'm also doing cuts elsewhere, but that's for the next post. The best place to keep in contact with me--in order of effectiveness--is Twitter, Tumblr, LJ, FB, Email, IM. I'm trying to get into Soundcloud, Youtube, and Streamzoo with mixed results. Oh, and AO3 but that's a whole other beast (a wonderful fic-vomiting rainbow beast of love, but still a beast). Also, if you feel like we have nothing in common anymore because our fandoms changed, defriend away! That tends to go without saying, but for the sake of thoroughness, I had to.
bohemia: (Sherlock - Pool)
I was trying to wait until I finished reading all the Sherlock Holmes stories, but I couldn't wait any longer. I'm only through to The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes and Tumblr and Twitter were driving me mad.

Spoilers )

Right. I'm going to go watch Leverage's half-season that I missed.
bohemia: (Celebs - Taylor Momsen)
A while ago I planned on dyeing my hair bright red. I researched how much that would cost at a decent salon near me and realized my cousin dyes her hair crazy colors all the time, and asked her advice in DIY kits.

Help me decide a color! )

The whole washing out thing isn't going to be much of an issue because I plan on chopping all my hair off in April (or May, I want to have it for at least a season so it depends on how fast I finally get to dyeing).
