Uh. So... Luke Conard, guys.

I wasn't a huge fan of Ministry of Magic when I saw them in November. I knew they were good and were my favorite wizard rock band, but I didn't know anything about the members other than Alex Carpenter was really good friends with them.

So now that I'm a little bit more versed on the Echo Base guys and how they roll, I was determined to see all of them live again.

I guess the point was for Luke and Kristina to go on tour as ALL CAPS, except Kristina's voice has been shattered and/or lost since perhaps LeakyCon? And maybe part of that's a coverup, but she wasn't there. It was just Luke. And I figured, since Luke just put out an album of his own stuff (mostly covers, but whatever), that he'd do most of those songs. I also thought he and Tiffany Alvord were supposed to be the opening acts for Alex Goot (who I'd only vaguely heard of before).

Anyway, when I got there, I'm pretty sure I arrived between acts as it was almost 8pm and the show was to start at 7pm. And I panicked because I thought I might have missed Luke, if he had gone first. Instead, this band called New Hollows took the stage. THEY WERE SO WEE. I don't fully understand how they were even on the same tour. I'm pretty sure their moms were their roadies and their banter included things like "have you ever been really in love with someone and then they crush your heart? Well, my sister had something like that happen and I wrote this to help her get through it." So precious. But they did a really good cover of "Airplanes" by B.o.B., which is also their single at the moment. I wasn't aware you could just cover a song and decide your new hit fall single would be a song that was overplayed last summer. And then they did a cover of "Jeff Buckley's version of 'Hallelelujah'." This cover of a version of an original thing is getting me dizzy. Anyway, yeah, set list for these weeboos:

Why You Left
Superhero
Waste of Time
Why Don't You Love Me
Hallelujah
The Untitled Song
Airplanes

Then Luke Conard took the stage! He forgot the words to "This Town" despite/because it was the first time any of the dudes were singing it live. I mean, I would hope if you spent two weeks promoting your new fall tour that you'd memorize the lyrics to the songs you were going to sing, but I GUESS NOT. And he did some banter between songs, did a VALA video when someone shouted, "Vala!" at him, ignored people asking about Ingrid's food poisoning and Kristina's vocals (what does he DO to these poor girls...), played some ALL CAPS songs and original things. There were a few people in the crowd who had no idea wtf he was doing with the nerdcore stuff and kept looking around at the other people wondering how and why they knew the lyrics by heart. I saw the couple next to me making fun of me. I guess there are some people who go to venues every now and then and have no idea who is playing until they get in? There were quite a few people at the Harry and the Potters concert in July looking up the band on their iPhones and searching Wikipedias. I assumed they had been dragged along by friends/paramours but I'm starting to doubt that since they could've just waited until after the show to ask about the band. Anyway, Luke's set list:

Accio Love
Don't Leave
Saved
Dashing Knight
Someone Like Me
This Town
Summer of '09

Then Tiffany Alvord came on and she was so ditzy sweet gumdrop sugar girly girl immediately that I tried not to walk over to the bar and have a couple of drinks until she got off the stage. She had a nice voice but her set amused me because most of the time she was just singing along to her iPod. Luke had some beats set up on his computer, but he actually played guitar the whole time. She played guitar on maybe four songs? And I think it's funny that Jason Schwartzman doesn't think he can go on tour while just singing to his iPod but this chick was clearly fine with it, and all she was doing were covers, mostly. In the middle of her set, Luke appeared in the crowd two people away from me to get photos of Tiffany to tweet out.

Set List:

Tonight Tonight
Scooby Dooby Doo song?
You and I/ And you ?
Magic
Fantasy (original song?)
Love You Like A Love Song
My Dream

Sorry, I wasn't really paying attention to the order. :P

Then Alex Goot came out, to a pop rock version of "Hedwig's Theme" and my expectations were raised. AND THERE WERE QUITE A FEW FANGIRLS IN FRONT OF ME AND I TOTALLY AM ONE NOW. Although I didn't understand this one girl who kept turning around to sing/lip sync to her taller friend whenever she knew the song. Aren't you there to see him play live? Why are you turning around to stare at your friend in a darkened room for half of the set.

Anyway, Goot was so witty with his banter with his guitarist named Chad and his other guitarist whose name I have forgotten. At one point the drummer and guitarist left so Chad and Alex could do an acoustic set, and as they were leaving, Alex was like, "Don't go far! I can't live without your striped shirt," to the guitarist, which was adorable to me. They all seem like really great bros. And if Goot's album hadn't been cheaper online, I would've bought it right then.

Set List:

?/Man in the Mirror/Beat It
You Make Me (?)
Read My Mind
Breathless
Driving
Grenade
Save Tonight
Pretty Eyes
Just The Way You Are /Teenage Dream/Firework
Want It That Way/Friday

I failed at capturing all the songs because the switchoffs in the songs themselves were so effortless. Afterwards I bought a "Luke Conard has no friends" pin for my bag of pins, and the tour poster because Luke was coming out for a Meet and Greet after the show and I needed something decent for him to sign. I am never one for autographs but I felt it was a good choice at the time. Apparently all three main acts were out for the M&G, and barely anyone was around Tiffany so I asked her to sign first. She had never heard of the name Dalia and had no idea it was a flower. "It's pretty! So exotic, I think! Thanks for coming!" Decent conversation but I didn't actually give a shit. Then I went to Luke and asked him to sign, he stole the marker from Tiffany in the middle of her signing something else, and then proceeded to be the most awkward human on the planet. Every question I asked him, he either nodded and grinned really wide or did his persian cat face. I was trying to work my way into asking about Jason Munday when I got interrupted by a rabid Youtube fan and silently moved onto Alex Goot as a security tried to peel the Youtuber off of Luke.

CAN I JUST SAY ALEX GOOT IS A BREATH OF FRESH AIR. I told him I'd never heard of him before and sort of regretted the fact that this was my first time seeing him live. During his set he'd mentioned he'd been in NY once before and no one showed up to his show besides the people working the venue that night. So I asked where he'd played and he said some place I've forgotten and I said I'd never heard of it. And he goes, "It's Pete Wentz' place," and I smile and together we were like, "That's why you've never heard of it." And he said it wasn't really his scene but was really glad everyone came out this night. So I told him to watch out for me and that I would be at every NY show from now on (it didn't sound so stalkerish, I said it pretty light-heartedly). <3333333 ALEX GOOT. When I'm done with the Echo Base guys' YouTube videos I might have to look into everything Goot has ever done on the internet. Sorry, vlogbrothers, you've been put on hold yet again!

I just finished watching every one of their videos on YouTube! Or, well, Jason, Alex and Luke's... now to get around to Kristina and all their other friends. :D

Awwww, I'm sure it'll be amazing! I'm disappointed that there doesn't seem to be a NYC WRF happening this year, but I'm looking forward to the World Cup again!!!
