Two years ago, the NYC MTA went on a strike. It conveniently happened in the middle of my finals week, when I was still at Pace (a completely different borough situated an hour away from my house). At that time we didn't have a car, so I had to rely on my brother-in-law to get me to my finals. Thankfully I had one final. But the strike, while only lasting days, cost the city upwards of $700 million in various revenue (people not able to shop in the middle of the Christmas season, get to work, using transportation for recreational means).
The Mayor said that the strike itself went against the terms of their contracts and fined the union $2.5 million dollars, and a judge even sentenced the President to ten days in jail.
It was highly inconvenient for us, but we New Yorkers stood by the MTA, because we knew they deserved new contracts. After two days of not having them, we were glad to have them back. In my mind the quiet on the streets was relative to the quiet in the air right after 9/11. When you live in a fairly busy city, you miss things like that.
So I'm going to support the WGA too, because one day I aspire to be among them, and I want to be treated fairly as well. Here's to you, WGA, for however long this lasts.
I find it amusing that the strike is taking place in the NaNoWriMo month. I can't be the only one.

Ugh, Prison Break. I want K-Ville! I've gotten used to Boulet and Cobb every Monday now!
