Chuck vs. the Debates

I am getting back on track with all those shows I meant to watch during the writer's strike that never actually made a dent in my TV watching. For some reason, I'm more inclined to watch a series when I have them in DVD format.
So the first one up was Chuck, which came in the mail from Blockbuster on Tuesday. Or rather, most of it did.
Of course the series gets better the moment I stopped watching! I really enjoy all the episodes from the second disc and decided I couldn't wait until the third and fourth discs came. Which is fine, because that finally bumped up The Office season two and three DVDs on my list.
I wasn't keen about Rachel Bilson popping up, but Lou and Chuck make much more sense to me than Sarah and Chuck-- especially since they're not actually going out, ha. The sandwich that she names after Chuck is actually what I put in my cold cut sandwiches.
And lol, this exchange, over the LTD (which, omg, MIB shoutout?!),
Chuck: Pretty shiny, though!
Casey: Yeah, she's shiny!
I melted. Where is the Serenity sequel? No one word can give me a bigger smile than "shiny" as spoken by Adam Baldwin.
Also, the slashy undertones between Morgan and Chuck make me giggle. For a moment I thought Morgan was going to freak out about the ring, thinking it was for him. lololol. This is two times better than Scrubs' guy love, in my opinion. I'll stay for the lulz.
Next up is The Office S2 and the half of S3 I missed and Brothers & Sisters. I'll probably do bitty reviews like this as I catch up with each of them.
The debate tonight was pretty good. I was impressed with both sides, although I am really confident in Biden. I knew next to nothing about his policies leading up to this. As much as I searched, everything seemed to be about Palin. I like Biden's honesty and concise statements. Palin wasn't as bad as I was expecting, and I think she did a better job at stating issues than John "Obama Doesn't Understand" McCain, even if she did seem a bit nervous at a few moments. And then there's the whole "Obiden" thing, haha.
Debates give me chills. I feel so certain about the outcome of the election, but at the same time everything feels so up in the air.

Date: 2008-10-03 05:33 am (UTC)It's not making my Monday lineup any easier, but I'm excited. They seem to know how to balance all the characters effectivelyy, and I'm pretty impressed with shows that can do that (listen up, Heroes).

Date: 2008-10-03 06:40 am (UTC)I agree with your assessment of the debate. Palin did a lot better than I expected, too! In fact, I was pleasantly surprised, because even though my view of her has not changed, it made the debate a lot more entertaining. I wish she'd cut back on the 'folksy' style; it feels fake, contrived, and unprofessional to me. Things like "say it ain't so, Joe!" are just too cutesy for a politician running for vice president. Also, the WINKING. Egads! I could see the SNL skits writing themselves. As far as content goes, she presented the talking points fairly well, but couldn't handle anything outside of that comfort zone; she seemed very rehearsed, in my opinion. That was expected, though, so I have to give her credit. This is by far the best she's done since being appointed (not that that necessarily says... er, anything). I was so relieved that she didn't latch on to a single phrase in the same way McCain did.
On Biden's side, I was cringing through the first little bit. I thought he got off to a shaky start. In fact, for the first ten to fifteen minutes, I was afraid there would be a major upset and Palin would crush him. However, once he hit his stride, he performed extremely well. I've liked him for a while now (I did a lot of research on his career after he was made VP), and by the end, I felt rather proud for his sake. Solid job, occasional word flubs aside, and I thought what emotion he did show was genuine -- a sense I've never once gotten from Palin. Granted, I am biased (I really try to be fair, but I wish I could be impartial and, therefore, more objective =/), but, personally, I find him much easier to relate to. He had more substantial answers which were better represented than Palin's, but again, I think most of us knew they would be going in. My biggest complaint would probably be how repetitive he was with certain things -- inevitable, maybe, but still a pet peeve of mine.
ALL FOUR of them need to be banned from using the word 'fundamental'. Yes, I am looking at you, Joey. Also 'maverick', because it is not only a laughable point by now, but also just really, really old. Alsoalso, 'team of mavericks', lawl.
The debate on whole was deeply engaging. In fact, I dare say it was riveting. There were a few moments that actually made me very emotional. I hope the next Obama-McCain debate is this interesting.

Date: 2008-10-05 12:11 am (UTC)She was very, very rehearsed. You can always tell when they set their sights on one point in the audience--or camera, like she did. But even with the folksy, "oopsy" talk and talking in circles, there was some substance to what she was saying. And it wasn't all "in the future" or "a year ago" instances, like McCain.
Biden is much more believable when he talks about being one of us and I enjoyed how easily and clearly he answered things-- not a bunch of "I promise" phrases.
The whole 'maverick' thing is pointless now. Not only is it old, but they're using it the wrong way! Plus, whenever I hear the word I think of the Marvel character, lol.

Date: 2008-10-03 04:49 pm (UTC)I agree with you, though, I think she did pretty well, considering how terrible her recent interviews have been. She still scares me and I still don't like her, but I can admit that she did a good job.

Date: 2008-10-05 12:17 am (UTC)I was expecting to do a lot of looking at my mom and giggling, like we did with McCain's run-around. I expected more so, but can only recall three times we laughed.
