You made yourself a new world where even strangers make more sense

The other night I couldn't sleep so I got around to finishing a bunch of fanmixes I've had sitting on my iPod forever. Mixes take me forever to do, because like everything else I do, I take them seriously.

1. Pick a theme/pairing and possibly a wide enough genre to encompass possible songs.
2. Go through iPod/iTunes/music library for songs that deal with theme and put them on a playlist.
3. Look up lyrics, knock off songs with words that don't exactly fit.
4. Listen to playlist, knock off songs that stray too far from genre of other songs.
5. Order songs into a storyline, or by music (I hate when mixes span large genres and don't segue well into the next song) and make a new playlist.
6. Listen to playlist, knock off more songs.
7. Listen to playlist one last time, add more songs or re-order as needed.
8. Upload songs, make cover art, post.

Most of the fanmixes were stuck at step 2, but as of right now three are at 7. \o/ The cover art bit is a whole process in itself, but more "try to mimic what's in my mind's eye" than anything else.

In visual media news, I finally saw Brüno and Half-Blood Prince on Monday, but the real highlight of that day was discovering that they've renovated the cheap theatre in my neighborhood. There's actual stadium seating and new seats (the old ones were slashed open and lumpy from 20+ years of usage). The theatre still looks like it's from the '40s, which I always loved about it, but it's comfortable and actually worth the cheap prices now. I think the [livejournal.com profile] m15m post about HBP sums up my feelings pretty well, and as for Brüno, it could've been a bit more... opaque.

Harper's Island: I didn't care for it much, as you can tell as it took me FOREVER to finish it. As much as I love Katie Cassidy, Chris Gauthier and Jim Beaver, none of them hold a candle to Richard Burgi who I didn't even know was in this until I started watching it. And then he died. :( They all died. Although when Katie almost died the first time I was hoping she would, because her character deserved to die. Because if you can't remember to swim to the sizes of the pool or the end where it was still open? You should die. Seriously.

And I knew from exclamations all over Twitter on the night of the finale that it wasn't Jimmy, but it being Henry was weird. He was my first choice after Richard Burgi's character died, but I didn't expect it to actually be him. And what was he expecting to happen between him and Abby? They're half-siblings! Creeper.

Actually, that little girl playing Madison is creepier.

I'm just about to start watching Leverage. I love Kane's music, even though I don't have a lot of it (three tracks?), but the minimum of his acting that I've seen has always been hysterically horrible to me. So I'm slightly concerned that he and Aldis Hodge are the main draws in this series for most of the fans, because I suspect it means the same thing as Harper's Island's popularity: It's a show with a bunch of people from Supernatural fandom! Which is a hypocritical thing for me to say, when I'll watch anything with someone from Firefly fandom (except Dollhouse). But I'm willing to give Leverage the benefit of the doubt, even if I wouldn't normally have given it a passing glance. Which says something, I imagine.

Leverage is such a nice show, and not just for the actors. I watched it for the plot (Con artists, wheee!) but it is a beautiful mix of funny, dramatic, and heartwarming. Sure, Timothy Hutton is not acting with those of his own level, but all five together are what make the show.

Plus, con artists, whee!

I am so into Leverage. It reminds me a lot of Burn Notice, but I enjoy the characters and I'm a sucker for con movies, so. And yeah, the characters are fantastic.

I actually can't wait for my Thursday shows to be over so I can get right back into Leverage. I should be caught up by this time tomorrow. :)

Another strike for me to watch Burn Notice. My poor friend has been trying to get me to watch a show for her forever, I keep wandering off to new things.

And yay for Leverage love!

haha, my odd loyalty to the USA Network at play. I think it's basically the same show as Leverage, just with higher stakes because Westen's an actual spy trying to get his job back, not just doing good deeds with con skills.

Oh, I definitely have a loyalty to USA too. Which is why I need to fulfill it, yeah. :D

♥Parker/Hardison!

Wow. I thought you meant Bruno and the Half-Blood Prince and basically just decided that that would be the most awesome movie ever.

Brüno and Dumbledore run in the same circles, obviously! He's also where Snape gets his hair products from.

How was Bruno? I've kind of been wanting to see it, but I'm not sure I actually want to spend money on it or not. Maybe a matinee ticket...

[identity profile] bohemu.livejournal.com 2009-07-31 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
It's definitely worth a matinee ticket. I saw it for $6.50. It was short, and basically followed Borat's formula, except you could tell which people were acting and which weren't. The moment I finally got into it turned out to be the ending (and probably would've been better if the lawsuits hadn't cut that part down), so.

That is EXACTLY how I do fanmixes, too!

I really enjoy Leverage. I don't take it too seriously but it's good fun, funny and it's always fun to see them stick it to the bad guys. Aldis Hodge's character cracks my shit up, he is hilarious!

[identity profile] bohemu.livejournal.com 2009-08-01 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
I LOVE THAT ICON. Awww, team.

At least I'm not the only one who spends that much time on things.

HARDISON IS MY FAVORITE. I like when the technology on these shows is at least somewhat believable. I can take my brain out for most things, but it's hard for me to ignore techie inaccuracies. So thankfully they got that right. And yeah, I don't think it's meant to be taken too seriously. I mean, Parker, right? Just throwing her partners off roofs without testing things, lol.

I love all his techie babble, too. "It took me an HOUR to torrent last night's Doctor Who,' 'DR. RAPLH O'KHAN!' Hyst everything he does is so so so funny!

And the way everyone looks at him like he's speaking Greek but we know. It's like Rodney McKay or Marshal Marshall. He sounds crazy, but those that are geeky enough understand what he's saying.

McKay. :D

I'm sad you didn't enjoy Harper's Island! I loved it, but, then again, I wasn't expecting it to be realistic (and it really wasn't). I was just watching it for the fun. And suspense. And the few characters I loved. Also, because I find Jimmy ridiculously hot.

[identity profile] bohemu.livejournal.com 2009-08-02 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Well, horror in general is never realistic, so I wasn't expecting it to be realistic. I think that maybe my marathon idea wasn't so helpful, because I didn't get the suspense as much as the "watch it every week" would have given me. That or I was paying too much attention to everyone's motives to really just let it happen.

Jimmy reminds me of Milo Ventimiglia, but yeah, it seems a lot of people are on board the Jimmy!train.

[identity profile] faith5by5-1013.livejournal.com 2009-08-02 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Marathoning just doesn't work for some people. I know it does for me because, if I start watching a show once a week, I won't really give it a chance beyond the first episode. It did take me a while to get attached to the characters though.

They do look freakishly alike. I noticed that right away.
