bohemia: (Black Books - I hate everything)
[personal profile] bohemia
Didn't go to that party from my last post. I couldn't find the address so after walking around for almost an hour and getting unhelpful texts from a co-worker I went home. My sister was gone this weekend though, so I had the room to myself. OBVIOUSLY THIS MEANS NETFLIX TIME.

Things wot I've seen so far:
Black Books
The IT Crowd (first season, gave up)
Stephen Fry in America (first three, will get back to eventually)
To The Ends of the Earth (I... fell asleep twice)

And a bunch of movies I half-paid attention to while I ran around AO3 a bit just to get them off my queue. Some I ended up really enjoying like Different for Girls, even if by that time of the night--after the really chase but also adorable The Decoy Bride--I just wanted to see them bone.

Speaking of The Decoy Bride (I didn't even know he was in it until he was the first one to pop up) I'm obsessed with finding everything Dylan Moran. I dug out Shaun of the Dead, which I own, and the S2 features of Black Books which I also own (randomly, thanks old job of my dad's) and downloaded Yeah, Yeah because it was the only complete Moran-related thing on the ihearts. BUT I NEED MORE. As for Black Books itself, I have so much love for it. I'm amazed at how funny and charming it was. I expected IT Crowd to be more of the same, but that one seems more like the sitcom from Extras. And while I don't exactly ship them, I would not be adverse to Bernard/Fran fic. Or more crappy puppet shows like the Black Dolls extra.

Why am I just getting into series that no one on Tumblr cares about anymore. It's like I don't even know my dashboard anymore. :(

I feel like I haven't spoken about other things I've done this summer because Torchwood/Doctor Who/NETFLIXXX so... bullets:

- Saw Brave, Magic Mike, and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. All great for their own reasons, even if Magic Mike showed me more of Olivia Munn than I wanted to see. And McConaughey. WHO EVEN LIKES HIM. I DON'T UNDERSTAND. PUT IT AWAY. Brave was sort of a B-list Pixar movie. It was nice but not their best. And AL: VH was fun and ridiculous and HE THREW A HORSE AT HIM.

- Went to Boston the weekend after July 4th because it was the only vacation my sister could afford and I have been there twice so I was their tour guide. By day two my sister had the hang of the transit system (coming from NYC, ANYTHING is decipherable). We heard "Payphone" almost three times a day so that was the theme song of the trip.

- Saw LeVar Burton at the Bronx Zoo a couple of week ago. He was introducing the Reading Rainbow app and posing for pictures. I wanted to talk to him but the line was long. I went around the zoo to all my favorite spots and rides instead.

- Saw The Amazing Spider-Man; it was cool. Refuse to see The Dark Knight Rises. I don't care.

- Tried learning basic Welsh phrases and changed my FB into Welsh for a while. Was confused as all fuck all around. I'm going to keep trying. I've always wanted a basic knowledge in Welsh, Gaelic and Mandarin. Japanese is slightly like Russian so I've got a foot in that door. I just need to decide on a Nordic language to complete my bucket list of languages.

- Went to The New World's Fair 2012 in Queens Saturday solely because it was at Flushing Meadows and I've always wanted to go to the park because of Men in Black. And then this year MIB3 came out and I felt like I just needed to go. But it wasn't like the grand expo my mind imagined the original to be. It was basically four tents and a stage and completely conspiracy theorists and hippie agendas. So I sat by the Unisphere for a while and then left. I'd tweeted/FB'd asking if anyone wanted to come to The Way Station but no one replied so I stayed in Queens and tried to go to the bar that was the Firecracker from The Black Donnellys. It ended up being packed so I went next door to a Thai shop for curry.

That's been my life lately. I can't complain. Now to get around to commenting everywhere!

omg, [ profile] splits_thesky and I spent most of the time going, "WHYYY. WHY ARE YOU IN THIS MOVIE SO MUCH." I have only seen like three of his movies (Amistad was pretty great! Tropic Thunder was hilarious!) but ... never because he was in them!

I also want to learn Welsh and Gaelic, though I'll probably do it after my Russian class is over. I actually had a chance to pick up some Welsh language books last year when I visited Wales (Cardiff, more specifically).

Also, I don't know if you know about it, but there's, which seems like a pretty helpful site.

I downloaded a podcast (Learn Welsh podcast, simply enough) but as much as it's better to hear the sounds, I have no idea how to spell most of the words. The host SAYS he's going to spell the words, but he only did that for 3 out of eleven words that he introduced so far. -_-

ooh, yeah, that was one of two sites I booked after I finished Torchwood: CoE. It has been pretty helpful in conjunction with :)

Wow you've been doing so much! I miss being able to go to the movies! I need to make a point to go one of these days!

I love languages also! I lost most of my French over the years and I'm slowly re teaching myself. It's harder now that I'm older. I am doing well with Japanese. Trying to memorize kanji is a pain. I can read the ones they teach to first graders lol. You ever want a Japanese conversation partner let me know!! I have been looking for one for ages!

Oh and check out a site called Live Mocha. It is an awesome language learning site !!

I rarely go to the movies because I spend two hours of the day traveling to/from work and once I get home I don't want to leave until I have to--which usually means work again. Sometimes I'll go to NJ and bang out a bunch of movies with my friend in a day like I did with Brave, Magic Mike and Vampire Hunter, or my family will make a trip of it like we did for Avengers... but otherwise I barely go. I'm all about Netflix on the weekends and during my daily commute.

I was learning conversational Japanese via Russian classes (a lot of the words are similar) and anime but learning the kanji is HARD. And now I've lost a lot of the ways I'd watch subbed anime so I've lost that, too.

I will! I have Rosetta Stone for most languages, but when I turn on my laptop I want to go to fun sites like Tumblr or YouTube, not sit and get yelled at for having a bad accent. :( I need more fun ways to learn stuff.

I just don't care? I'm sure it's a cool movie but every time I see a Nolan movie I go, "Wow, that was intellectual and thoughtful. Okay, back to the fun stuff." They're always good movies, but never something I want to re-visit. And never something I really want to spend my money on The only reason I saw the last two in theatres were because people dragged me to see it (my parents for BB and my CT friends for TDK).

......I need your "that actually did make a lot of sense" icon rn, because....that actually did make a lot of sense.

On my part, every time I remember the new one's out, I get excited to see it! But then....I forget about it again (also, like, I only actually saw the last one in theaters, and while it was SUPER-exciting super large, I don't know that I'll be totally heartbroken if I only get to see this one on DVD!).

Dude sometimes I am more than ready for thought-provoking movies! I do enjoy them from time to time. But... I loved Watchmen because it hit those lines and I also really wanted to watch it again? But TDK never does that. Maybe it also has to look pretty in some way for me to enjoy it, now that I think about it because Watchmen is undeniably beautiful (the amount of times my dad and I just stop and watch scenes when it's on TV for the hell of it equals ∞) and TDK is like a Supernatural episode? And Inception was the same. The concept of Inception was AWESOME. I AM ALL ABOUT MOVIES ABOUT CONS. MOVIES ABOUT DREAMS. Together? I should be watching it forever and forever! But... I'm not.

OKAY ALSO, because obvz you need to know all my hair decisions:

so I was already toying with growing out my hair a little - not too much, mind you, because I REALLY like it short, but just a little, because I'm kiiiiind of starting to miss being able to DO things with my hair - and then when we were at that wedding/reception a couple weeks ago, remember, there was this girl (well, 30-something-ish woman, I guess) there who had her hair in sort of a...idk, 1920s? 1930s? bob, where most of it was straight/slightly wavy, and then the bottom (her hair was about chin length) was all curly. And I LOVED it, and though my hair is obvz all-over curly, in contrast, that just made me want to grow out my hair a little even more, to see if I could rock something like that.

So I was just randomly googling pictures rn, to see if there was something equivalent that my hair could do, and -- DUDE. Like, especially in the first picture??
...I know her hair Has Been Done, so obvz mine isn't going to look as fingerwave-y as hers does in some of the pictures, buuuuuut, DUDE, I AM INSPIRED. HAIR, LET'S DO THIS (...and then, you know, if I don't like it, we're going Short short again).

DUDE YES. I was combing my hair the other day (I can DO THAT AGAIN!) and I was like I REALLY MISS BEING ABLE TO DO STUFF BESIDES WASH AND GEL MANNN. And uh, idk that link isn't working? But my hair itself rn is like a mixture of pilot!Sherlock and Bebop!Cumberbatch (idk what was that photoshot) and like I'm starting to realize that my hair isn't as curly, somehow, as Benedict's? I keep looking at photos of Sherlock and comparing myself and being like BUT IT SHOULD BE CURLING BY NOW. WHERE ARE MY CURLS. HOW DOES THIS ENGLISHMAN HAVE CURLIER HAIR THAN ME WHAT IS THIS. So I'm halfway between 1. Cutting it all off because apparently Sherlock isn't going to look quite the way I want it to, 2. Keeping it this length because it's not yet at the awkward stage it was when I cut it last year and looked like Little Orphan Annie for a month or two, but not short enough to do NOTHING with. and 3. Still growing it out, if not for Sherlock, just for the long bangs I'd need for the (...omg I only have to type in "bene" for Google to know who I mean, wowwwww internet, u cray-z) Benny Batch cut that I was going to get after NYCC.

OH, BOO. ??

But also, I like the Gingerbatch pictures best...?? buuuuut that might be because that's pretty much what my hair looks like (...well, looked like, I guess, now, since mine has now grown out a bit annnnnd so mostly just looks like a mess), except -- not ginger, right.

Ah, okay, I did see that on Tumblr! DUDE GO FOR IT. Especially since Jazz is coming up and... you'd make that work~

Ha, well, I was messing about with my hair yesterday while it was wet and decided Gingerbatch might look REALLY WEIRD with my face shape and I can't decide if it's just me being used to my hair in the back being long or if it's a truth. ughhhhh. My face shape is supposed to work with everything! BUT SOMEHOW IT MIGHT NOT.

lulz, truth, coming home on Saturday, I kept looking at my reflection in the train window and being like, "but my hair is SO CUTE this length!!". But NO, SELF, I AM DOING A THING RN, GO AWAY. also, you know, I might always just cut it again, soooo.

but yes, so, I THINK YOU SHOULD TRY IT! hairstyles do not have to be for FOREVER, right (as this year seems to be demonstrating, for both of us!).

Like, wait, REALLY, that's what you want to focus on, her HAIR??? I mean, YES, sometimes I, too, have passing thoughts about Olympians' hair/outfits, but then that always gets overshadowed by, you know, them being AWESOME KICK-ASS OLYMPIANS.
